The same goes for handicaps or disabilities
physical. There also doesn't seem to be an age limit for using them
puppets in therapies.

The materials used for the
construction of the puppets is usually adapted to the type of
disability, may be light or heavy depending on the purpose in the
use.

According to the goals set in the therapy, the
construction can be simple - you want a quick result - or sometimes
it can be more elaborate to make a careful observation of the process
creative and psychomotor work.

Albert Bagno makes the following classification of use of techniques for different disabilities:

Puppet or wire puppet: for physical disabilities, particularly people who cannot use their legs or torso.

Table puppets: for the physically handicapped, in particular the blind or visually impaired.

Glove puppets: for mental disabilities, mainly young children.

Marotes: for adult mental disabilities.

Shadows: for severe mental disabilities.

Horned marotes: for children with physical or mental disabilities, or both at the same time or who have a reduced ability.

This list was compiled in 1985. Although it serves as an indication, it is now incomplete.

Many new ones have been made since then
from experiments, unpublished materials and mixed techniques have been discovered
unusual. Depending on the disability we can see that they have merged
techniques to facilitate manipulation and to develop the
communication and creativity.

For example, it has been shown that people with hearing impairments go spontaneously from the marota to the wire puppet.

The wire puppet has the whole body, the
expression is total and it’s not just a talking puppet. In fact the
the puppet's mouth is of little interest to the deaf, rather it is the
expression. Maybe that's why this interest in the puppet of
fil.

Muppets have been used for speech problems because the articulated movement of the mouth allows vocalization to work.

There are also exposed puppets that are manipulated
with a stick on his head, on the nape of his neck and another on his arm. His puppets
that coordinate the movements well, because they can make the head tilt, the
body, arm raising, walking… They are important for a child who does not know well
his body. It can contribute a lot in psychomotor skills.

Here is another classification of
puppet instruments according to the distance more or less than the
separates from the body of the manipulator, according to Mariano Dolci.

"The closest instrument is the mask,
kind of double the skin of the person wearing it. Then there is the
glove puppet, double skin, but of an off-center organ: the hand.

Farther still, the stem puppet, which
the hand of the manipulator is limited to holding, then the puppi
Sicilian, clearly separated from the manipulator, but who nevertheless remains
firmly tied through two iron rods forming a cord
umbilical cord.

Finally the end would be, the puppet of thread or marionette.

This whole classification can be extended
in one sense or another: on the one hand facial painting, tattooing,
on the other hand, the remote-controlled or animatronic robot.

We could outline things like this
way: by traversing the series from the mask to the thread puppet,
the projection processes are stimulated, to the detriment of the
identification, which are inhibited. In the opposite sense, that is, of the
thread puppet in the mask, are the identification mechanisms that
they are reinforced to the detriment of the projection mechanisms.

Let us examine, then, the two ends of the
series: with the mask we have the maximum tendency to the identification and
the minimum to the projection, which means that the person carrying the
mask will try to identify with what it represents. The manipulator
of a wire puppet, on the contrary, experiences less this tendency
identify with a distant being - and who constantly marks the
separation, in a way, through the sending of signals: “have
be careful not to hold me so high or so low, let me tell you something
what,

One identifies less with a wire puppet, but directs it a little more. ”

Some children with disabilities may choose
in a natural and spontaneous way the puppetry technique that best suits them
goes for their disability, but sometimes it is necessary that the
therapists or teachers select the technique because students are not
in a position to choose.

It is important to find out if a technique
puppeteer is better than another for children with disabilities and quines
Consequences of changing the technique on the general expression.
It is therefore essential that the educator be aware of the
different types of puppet handling.

Albert Bagno (Puppeteer).
