The musical puppets

story by Teia Moner and Cristina Bertrán
    • Level: Childhood education. P-5
    • Disorder: Autism Spectrum
    • Technique: Mixed puppets
This activity allows us to reinforce the communicative, relational aspects and the ability to remember. These are some of the weaknesses in students with autism spectrum disorders.
The autistic person needs to communicate and give meaning to the action both with others and with himself. You need to remember to structure your actions. This action allows you to break the silence, relieve tension and give way to creativity, facilitating the learning of personal and social attitudes.
Autism is a disorder that does not go away, but we can change certain behaviors. That is why we must look for activities that allow us to work on behaviors through visual and audio supports, and that facilitate communication with the outside world, in order to consolidate relational behaviors.
Students with autism spectrum have a low tolerance for frustration. This activity allows you to successfully achieve the goals set. The technique used with the puppets is varied, as each character needs a different type of manipulation, and is subject to the instrument it represents. In the design of the puppets, priority has been given to the instrument, looking for a type of manipulation that is comfortable to sound.

"THE MUSICAL PUPPETS"
DISCRIMINATE SOUNDS, WORK ON CONCENTRATION AND HEARING MEMORY
Level: Early Childhood Education: P-5
Area: Musical Language, Verbal Language
Disorder: Autism Specter
TARGETS
Auditory discrimination and sound analysis:
  • Match the sound with the character represented by the sound-producing source.
  • See the difference between loud, medium and soft sound.
  • Reproduce the sound felt, sounding the same puppet-instrument.
  • Repeat onomatopoeias.
Interpreting slogans in common contexts:
  • Keep an eye on the story with puppets that sound and be able to remember, verbally, when seeing the characters.
  • Remember the order in which the actions of the story take place.
  • Reproduce and act out a story with the help of the teacher and the puppets-instruments.
  • Remember and reproduce the sound or rhythmic order of a sequence of two or more sounds or rhythms.
CONTENTS
  • Extension and improvement of vocabulary and oral expression.
  • Reproduction of different sounds, being aware of each onomatopoeia.
  • Differentiation of sound intensity.
  • Representation through puppets.
  • Positive participation in the activity.
  • Respect for the material used.
  • Personal improvement.
METHODOLOGY
Concentration, auditory memory and sound discrimination are worked on by telling a story with puppets.
PROCEDURES
  • The teacher tells the story with puppets.
  • The teacher grabs a puppet and makes it sound without the student seeing it. The student has to guess the character to whom the sound corresponds.
  • The teacher retells the story with puppets and then represents the story with the help of the student.
  • The teacher makes a rhythm with a puppet. The student must repeat the same rhythm.
Once this individual work has been done with the student, the activity is repeated with the whole class.
Once you have worked individually with the student with special educational needs, it is important to carry out the activities with the rest of the class as well, as this helps to boost their self-esteem and strengthen their security.
TIMING
Two one-hour sessions with the individual student.
An hour-long session with the whole class.
This activity can be repeated during the course and thus see the evolution of the objectives set.
EVALUATION
By means of an observation grid.
MATERIALS
    • Puppets: Mother, Father, Son, Daughter, Clown and Crocodile
    • Plasticized explanation of the story
    • Teaching guide
